Donald Trump said in remarks to Axios that he expects diplomatic contacts with Iran to resume this week. The U.S. president said Tehran is seeking an agreement but that the terms it has presented have not reached a level Washington could accept.
Trump argued that Iran’s demands resemble conditions that could have been accepted about a year ago. Saying that Iran had pushed its leverage too far during the negotiations, Trump said the option of resuming U.S. military attacks against Iran remained on the table when asked whether Washington would restart them.
Oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz
Trump also said the U.S. military was actively supporting the passage of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Saying tanker traffic reached a record level over the weekend, Trump said the volume of crude oil passing through the strait had reached its highest level since the conflict began, at more than 20 million barrels.
Araghchi speaks on negotiations and retaliation
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country is ready to negotiate with the United States but is fully prepared to respond to any new military attacks. Araghchi met with U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner last week in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly sessions, with Qatar acting as mediator.
Iran allegedly offered to open the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks within a week in exchange for the United States lifting its naval blockade, ending sanctions on oil sales and reinstating a regional ceasefire. Trump rejected the proposal on Saturday.
After seven months of fighting that is believed to have begun in late February with large-scale attacks by the United States and Israel, the sides are maintaining their positions between pursuing negotiations and taking military action.
