U.S. President Donald Trump proposed naming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” at the Republican Party convention held in Dallas, Texas.
Trump said the war with Iran was ongoing, arguing that the United States was in a superior position and had won the war. He said this outcome would lower oil prices and claimed that the United States controlled the strategic waterway. Trump also said that the Iranian administration would be pleased with the new name.
Claiming that Iran had “collapsed,” Trump argued that the country had bullied the Middle East for 51 years but was no longer in the same position.
The U.S. president also warned that the Pickaxe Mountain area in Iran could be targeted. Saying he had received information that there was activity in the area, Trump stated that they might have to deliver a “very harsh” response to Iran.
Trump also declared that they would not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. His remarks came at a time when tensions between Iran and the United States were continuing around the Strait of Hormuz.
The tensions are rooted in a June-dated agreement that envisages reopening the strategic waterway and laying the groundwork for a broader peace deal.
