As clashes between Washington and Tehran continued, U.S. President Donald Trump argued that Iran had “completely collapsed.”
In a brief post on his Truth Social account, Trump wrote, “Iran is completely collapsing,” but provided no further details about his assessment.
Trump’s claims about Iran’s situation
Speaking on Friday, Trump reiterated that Iran was not ready to reach the “right agreement” with Washington. He said Tehran wanted an agreement but, in his assessment, was not ready to accept the right terms.
Trump also claimed that Iran had no money, navy or air force and could not pay its soldiers and police officers. He further claimed that inflation in Iran stood at 350 percent.
U.S. military and economic pressure
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said a day earlier that the United States had entered an “economic D-Day” phase against Iran. Bessent argued that the Trump administration was dismantling the military and nuclear capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Bessent claimed that approximately 100 percent of Iran’s military factories had been destroyed and that its nuclear program had been buried. The statements came as the U.S. administration increased economic and military pressure on Iran.
Agreement on the Strait of Hormuz did not take effect
Trump also claimed that the United States had “full control” of the area surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the waterway south of Iran.
Washington and Tehran signed an agreement in June to end the clashes and resume maritime transport through the strait. However, the agreement did not take effect because of disagreements over the terms of its implementation and the future of navigation on the waterway.
The clashes began in late February with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, followed by Iranian attacks on targets in Israel and U.S. military bases in the region.
