Former President Donald Trump called Washington D.C. City Council member Janeese Lewis George a "communist" and pledged to block her policy agenda, which he argued would jeopardize the capital's security.
In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Lewis George would "almost certainly be elected Mayor of Washington D.C." and listed her plans including "emptying prisons, making D.C. a sanctuary city, opposing ICE, readmitting criminal foreign nationals to the capital, resisting crime-fighting operations, defunding the police, and expanding no-cash bail."
Trump wrote, "In the end, this won't work, and I won't allow it to work because I worked hard to make Washington D.C. almost crime-free and the envy of the world." He said he would meet with Lewis George but would not allow the capital to be "destroyed by a communist follower."
Lewis George, who describes herself as a democratic socialist, took a significant step toward succeeding Mayor Muriel Bowser earlier this month by winning the Democratic primary, defeating Kenyan McDuffie and five other candidates. In the overwhelmingly Democratic capital, a primary victory typically ensures a general election win.
Lewis George's campaign platform includes ending police cooperation with ICE, opposing youth curfews, free public transit, and universal child care. The candidate argues that federal troops and "masked ICE agents" pose a greater threat to young people than juvenile crime.
Trump's central focus on reducing crime in the capital during a potential second term sets the stage for a possible conflict with Lewis George. The former president maintains a National Guard presence in the city and has threatened to end the capital's home rule if local officials fail to control crime.
Lewis George has called Trump's deployment of the National Guard a "direct attack on city residents" and accused the president of using the Home Rule Act as a weapon. Trump previously said he would consider placing Washington under federal control if Lewis George were elected.
