Trump’s map showing New Mexico’s name as “New America” drew a reaction from the state’s Democratic Governor Grisham.
In the map, the word “Mexico” was crossed out and replaced with “America.” In a statement posted on X, Grisham said the name New Mexico was not up for debate. “This was our name even before the United States was founded,” Grisham said.
The governor argued that Trump’s post was an attempt to distract attention from the war in Iran and rising oil prices. She said people in New Mexico were paying more for groceries and had less access to health care.
Grisham said New Mexico was serving its residents under Democratic leadership. “While the White House wastes its time painting over maps, New Mexico is busy doing its job,” she said.

Former U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland also said she did not support Trump’s initiative. In a post on X, Haaland wrote, “I will always stand behind what makes New Mexico New Mexico.”
Haaland also recalled in a video recorded at a campaign event that Trump wanted to change the state’s name to “New America.”
In another social media post by Trump, surrounding areas including Canada, Mexico and Greenland were shown as “U.S. territory.”
