Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on Russia and Ukraine to shield energy and grain from their war if a ceasefire cannot be reached, speaking at a press conference in Istanbul on Friday after hosting the first R4+E3 foreign ministers' meeting.
"Either the war stops, or, if it does not, the parties should introduce an exception for energy and grain," Fidan said, recalling that Türkiye had made such an arrangement possible two and a half years ago. While the two countries fight as if to destroy each other, he said, international markets and other countries should not be hit in the same way.
Fidan said the main question now is how grain from Ukraine and Russia can reach world markets, and that proposals on the issue were being discussed with the parties concerned. He added that participants hoped for a ceasefire as soon as possible, followed by a peace agreement, and that steps toward safe and free navigation in the Black Sea should be taken without delay if a truce is not reached.
"No solution" in striking Iran
On Iran, Fidan said the ministers agreed that a renewed attack on the country would spread war and conflict across the region again. "A military intervention against Iran is in no way a solution," he said, noting that there was near consensus that dialogue and diplomacy were the right path. He also said the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened as soon as possible.
The Istanbul talks brought together the R4 group of Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia with Britain, France and Germany, known as the E3, as well as Italy.
