Emel Derinöz Tekin has taken office as Türkiye's consul general in Toronto, succeeding Can Yoldaş, who said farewell to the community in mid-September. The consulate general serves Turkish citizens in Ontario as well as Manitoba and Nunavut.
In her first message to the community, Derinöz Tekin said the consulate's main priority would be to respond effectively to citizens' needs, protect their rights and keep improving consular services. She said Toronto and Ontario's economic, financial, academic and technological strengths offer major opportunities for Türkiye-Canada relations, and that the mission would work to expand cooperation in trade and investment, science, technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, education, culture and entrepreneurship.
Derinöz Tekin said the consulate would work closely with the community's umbrella organizations, civil society groups, professional bodies, business people, academics and young people, and would support efforts to keep the Turkish language and culture alive for future generations. She said she hopes to turn the consulate into a meeting point where the community can share ideas and develop joint projects, in coordination with the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa and the Yunus Emre Institute in Toronto.

Born in 1978 in Afşin, Derinöz Tekin graduated from Middle East Technical University's Department of International Relations and joined Türkiye's Foreign Ministry in 2001. She has served at the embassies in Hanoi, Copenhagen, Tokyo and Islamabad, where she was deputy chief of mission, and at the consulate general in Berlin, as well as in several directorates in Ankara, including consular services and citizens abroad.
