In Harrisburg, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, an operation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to apprehend undocumented immigrant Clemente Lara-Hernandez faced resistance. An ICE spokesperson said that when agents attempted to detain him, he "used his vehicle as a weapon" and crashed into an ICE vehicle.
After the incident, the undocumented immigrant drove the wrong way down a one-way street and hit a civilian vehicle. During this, a federal agent opened fire and another agent was wounded in the hand. No one was hit by the gunfire.
Lara-Hernandez managed to flee the scene, while the FBI took over the investigation. The Harrisburg Police Department merely secured the scene.
ICE officials confirmed that Lara-Hernandez's criminal record includes hit-and-run, assault, and domestic violence incidents. The agency stressed a significant increase in attacks on officers during immigration enforcement operations nationwide. In a statement, ICE said, "Attacks on ICE law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to apprehend the most dangerous criminals have surged 1,300 percent, vehicular assaults 3,300 percent, and death threats 8,000 percent."
Efforts to capture suspect Lara-Hernandez are ongoing.
