As the trade dispute between the United States and Canada continues, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced measures to counter Washington’s new tariffs. Carney said the U.S. tariffs were intended to weaken and divide Canada, calling them a miscalculation.
Carney said Canada would impose dollar-for-dollar retaliation against U.S. tariffs starting Sept. 8. The Canadian prime minister also announced that trade talks between the two countries had been suspended after Washington made demands that Canada could not accept.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Canada’s tariffs and Ottawa’s relationship with Washington in a post on Truth Social on Sunday.
Trump argued that Canada wanted to benefit from the advantages of being a state without becoming one. Saying that Canada imposed high tariffs on U.S. agricultural products, Trump said American farmers had paid large amounts in customs duties for years.
