Federal Judge Timothy Kelly granted a request for a preliminary injunction protecting the White House press credentials of employees of CNN, MS NOW and Politico. The decision prevents the administration from revoking the outlets’ permanent press credentials while their lawsuit proceeds.
The ruling bars the administration from putting into effect, implementing or maintaining the credential revocation policy adopted on September 18, 2026. The decision preserves the status quo established after the temporary restraining order issued on September 24, 2026.

Access ban and lawsuit
On September 18, Trump barred journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from entering the White House. Trump also accused the outlets of disseminating “fake news” and producing critical coverage.
In a lawsuit filed three days later, the three media outlets argued that the ban violated the First and Fifth Amendments to the US Constitution, which protect freedom of the press and the right to a fair trial.

Kelly had previously issued a temporary order requiring the journalists’ press credentials to be reinstated.
