The U.S. Department of State decided to reduce the number of personnel serving at its diplomatic missions in Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan because of security threats.
The decision followed assessments in a memo attributed to U.S. intelligence and described as having been sent by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The memo said Iran had significantly increased its efforts to carry out attacks against American personnel and had taken its preparations to an advanced stage.

Preparations by Iranians for lethal attacks against U.S. citizens have reached an advanced stage in the Middle East and some other countries.
The memo did not provide details about the possible targets of the attacks or the nature of the planned operations.
A U.S. administration official said the decision to reduce staff at the diplomatic missions was linked to attacks by the Houthis in Yemen and a terrorism threat allegedly originating from Iran. The official said operations would be scaled back and only essential personnel would remain on duty.
