New restrictions imposed by New York authorities on federal immigration operations have deepened the dispute between the state and the Trump administration.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced that they would unveil new measures, arguing that ICE operations in the state had gone too far. New York Attorney General Letitia James is also taking part in the announcement.
Local agencies given until August 25
The measures adopted as part of the state budget limit ICE officers’ use of masks during operations.
The new rules also restrict local police and sheriff’s departments from cooperating with ICE in civil immigration enforcement. Governor Hochul asked local law enforcement agencies with 287(g) agreements with ICE to terminate those agreements and gave them until August 25 to do so.

Trump administration warns New York over ICE
Tom Homan, the Trump administration official responsible for border security, warned that more ICE officers could be sent to New York following the state’s decisions.
The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the measures adopted in New York. The lawsuit has taken the dispute over immigration policy between the state and the federal government into a new phase.
