U.S. President Trump called for interest rates in the country to be lowered to 1% or below. He said rates should be cut rapidly for the sake of the U.S. economy.
In a message posted on his social media account, Trump argued that the United States has "by far the best credit in the world." Saying that new investments were rapidly expanding the country, Trump called for interest rates to be brought down further in light of this situation.
Trump also claimed that the United States would gain at least $1.5 trillion a year if trade with countries with which it runs trade deficits were halted. Arguing that the trade deficit was merely an elaborate expression used to describe "damage," Trump said the United States was carrying nearly every country in the world and that this could no longer continue.
Trump reiterated that rates should be cut "quickly" and clearly expressed his demand regarding interest rate policy in his social media post.
At its September meeting, the Fed raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%-4%. The increase marked the first policy rate hike since 2023.
