The United States has lifted sanctions on the Eritrean Defense Forces and several Eritrean individuals and entities previously targeted under measures related to the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia.
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the removals on September 18, 2026, as part of an update to its sanctions designations.
Eritrean Defense Forces Removed From Sanctions List.
Among those removed from the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) List are the Eritrean Defense Forces.
The update also covers the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), Eritrea’s ruling political party, as well as the Red Sea Trading Corporation and Hidri Trust.
Eritrean officials Hagos Ghebrehiwet Woldekidan and Abraha Kassa Nemariam were also among those removed from the sanctions list.
Why Did the US Impose the Sanctions?
The measures were introduced during the conflict in northern Ethiopia and amid concerns over the humanitarian and human rights situation in the country.
The Eritrean Defense Forces were designated by the United States in November 2021 under Executive Order 14046.
The latest action follows the termination of the U.S. national emergency declared in September 2021 in response to the situation in Ethiopia.
Eritrea’s Strategic Position on the Red Sea.
The decision comes as Eritrea’s strategic position along the Red Sea continues to draw international attention.
Eritrea has an extensive coastline along one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, connecting the Red Sea with major international shipping routes.
The September 18 decision removes the Eritrean Defense Forces and the specified Eritrean individuals and entities from the U.S. sanctions list. It should not be interpreted as the removal of every U.S. sanction or restriction involving Eritrea.
