Diesel fuel imports from Russia have come under fire from seven U.S. senators. The senators called for the shipments to be halted immediately, arguing that the imports are illegal.
In a joint statement, the senators recalled that Congress banned imports of Russian energy products in 2022. They said the measure was intended to prevent U.S. dollars from financing Russia's war in Ukraine, and said the United States should not buy Russian fuel until Moscow ends its attacks on Ukraine and threats against NATO allies.

Senators criticize Trump administration
The senators alleged that the administration had acted without a legal basis. The statement said U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to allow Russian diesel to be imported into the country directly contradicted existing law and that the administration had not consulted Congress.
The senators also said the administration had failed to explain the reasons for its decision as required by law. The joint statement was signed by Democratic senators Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal and Ron Wyden, and Republican senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and John Curtis.
Agreement plans millions of tons of diesel
Donald Trump said on Friday that Russia would immediately send more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the United States and global markets under an agreement reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The agreement provides for the supply of 500,000 tons of diesel in November. A subsequent shipment is planned to include 1 million tons, followed by another delivery of 3 million tons.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the agreement as a “gift” to Putin. Zelenskyy warned that easing restrictions on Russian diesel exports could help Moscow finance its war efforts.
