A new criticism has emerged from Washington amid trade tensions between Canada and the United States. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described Canada’s decision to enter a trade conflict with Donald Trump as a strategic mistake with severe economic consequences.
Duffy argued that Canada benefited more than the United States from bilateral trade. He claimed that Canada benefited from US security guarantees while harming American interests in return.
The US transportation secretary predicted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney would return to the negotiating table very quickly once the full impact of US tariffs became clear.
Trump and Carney traded accusations over trade tensions
The tensions escalated further after Trump made statements on the Truth Social platform. Trump argued that Canada wanted to benefit from the advantages of being a state without assuming the corresponding obligations. He also accused Canada of imposing high tariffs on American agricultural products.
Carney, meanwhile, said the two countries were practically at war over trade. The Canadian prime minister claimed that Washington had miscalculated the increase in tariffs and was trying to weaken and divide Canada.
Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on September 8
After trade talks were suspended, Carney announced that Canada would retaliate against the tariffs imposed by the United States on a dollar-for-dollar basis starting September 8.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer claimed that Canada had withdrawn from the talks when an agreement was within reach. Carney, however, argued that Washington had made unacceptable demands.
Duffy also said that Canada did not have an army and that its single-payer healthcare system had failed.
