US Vice President JD Vance announced that President Donald Trump wants to open a new chapter with Iran. Vance's remarks coincided with the lead-up to a quadrilateral meeting in Switzerland involving the US, Pakistan, Qatar, and Iran.
Vance's Statement on Iran
Vance asserted that 'significant progress' had been made in negotiations with Iran in the last few hours. He also claimed that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the termination of Iran's nuclear program had already been achieved.
Vance said Trump wants to open a new page in relations with the Iranian people and that the US is ready to make a fundamental transformation in relations if the Iranian government abandons its policies that disrupt regional stability and its long-term goals of acquiring nuclear weapons.
Assessments from Participating Leaders
Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif thanked the US President for his 'wise and dynamic leadership' in contributing to the organization of this meeting. Sharif expressed confidence that the ongoing talks would yield productive results.
Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani emphasized that the reached agreement is of great importance not only for regional security but also for global security and the international economy.
Talks Under the Islamabad Accord Framework
Previously on Sunday, US-Iran talks began under the 'Islamabad Accord' framework at Switzerland's Bürgenstock ski resort. This accord aims to pave the way for a permanent end to the US-Israel war against Iran.
Iran and the US announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point accord through Pakistan's mediation. The agreement, called the 'Islamabad Accord' and electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on June 18, came into effect.
The accord includes provisions to end the war, including the war in Lebanon, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and lift the US naval blockade on Iran.
