Seven people were shot, one of them fatally, inside a Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday night, police said. Three of the six wounded were in critical condition.
Fairfield police officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. to reports of a shooting at the mall on Travis Boulevard. The six surviving victims were taken to local hospitals. Police have not released the victims' names or ages.
Video from the scene showed police cars and ambulances lining the area around the mall, their emergency lights flashing in the dark.
No suspect identified
Police Chief Dan Marshall said investigators had not identified a suspect or suspects, and no arrest had been reported early Saturday. Detectives were interviewing witnesses, and a motive was not known.
"This is still a very active crime scene," the Fairfield Police Department said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims."
Police asked anyone with information to call the department at 707-428-7600.
On the eve of Halloween
The shooting came on the eve of Halloween, when seasonal costume stores such as Spirit Halloween draw large crowds. Fairfield, a city of about 120,000 people in Solano County, lies roughly halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento.
