A building in Gaza City that had sustained heavy damage in previous Israeli attacks collapsed on September 16, 2026. At least 16 people were killed, while more people may have been trapped under the rubble. About six displaced Palestinian families were staying in the building.
Gaza Civil Defense teams conducted search-and-rescue operations among the sections of the heavily damaged structure. Limited resources were available to clear the rubble and reach those trapped, making the operation more difficult.

Initial figures gave different casualty numbers
Initial reports put the number of people trapped under the rubble at about 100, including at least 50 children. However, these figures were not treated as confirmed final results at the same level of certainty as the initial toll of at least 16 deaths.
As search operations progressed, the number of deaths and the number of people trapped under the rubble were expected to become clear.
The building had sustained damage severe enough to make it dangerous for habitation. There was no definitive explanation as to whether its collapse on September 16 resulted from a new attack or structural weakness caused by the earlier damage.
Damaged buildings continue to be used for shelter
Many buildings damaged or partially destroyed during the war in Gaza continue to be used because safe shelter is insufficient. Limited repair options and heavy rescue equipment are increasing the risks posed by these structures and making it harder to reach people trapped under the rubble.

Previous attacks destroyed or heavily damaged homes, schools and structures used as shelters in Gaza. The reported death of at least 106 civilians, including 54 children, in the attack on the Engineers Building on October 31, 2023, was among the earlier examples of the risks facing buildings used as homes and shelters. That incident was separate from the building collapse on September 16.
