In a poll aired on ZDF’s Politbarometer, the AfD maintained its lead in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 37 percent. The SPD ranked second with 34 percent, while the Left Party stood at 10 percent, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at 7 percent, the Greens at 5 percent and the Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Understanding (BSW) at 4 percent.
The AfD needs a coalition
The current figures show that the AfD would not secure an outright majority in the state parliament with 37 percent of the vote. The party would need to form a coalition with another political party to establish a government.
The established political parties in Germany’s opposition to forming coalitions with the AfD is regarded as one of the main factors that could make it difficult to form a government after the election.
The SPD came first in 2021
In the last state parliament election held in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2021, the SPD came first with 39.6 percent and formed a coalition government. In the same election, the AfD received 16.7 percent, the CDU 13.3 percent, the Left Party 9.9 percent and the Greens 6.3 percent.
