ARD television’s exit poll showed that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) ranked first with 44.5% of the vote in the parliamentary election in Germany’s Saxony-Anhalt state.
The Christian Democratic Union received 18.5% of the vote, while the Left Party secured 9.5%, the Greens 9% and the Social Democratic Party 8%. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance reached 5% and passed the electoral threshold, according to preliminary results.
The AfD’s vote share rose by 23.7 percentage points compared with the 2021 election. As the party did not secure an absolute majority in the exit poll, its ability to form a government could depend on coalition talks.
The final election results are expected to be announced overnight or the following day.
