Bright Eyes was evacuated during their 21st anniversary concert scheduled for June 6 at Forest Hills Stadium in New York due to severe weather conditions. The Governors Ball festival that same weekend was also affected by the storm.
Earlier this year, the band announced three special concerts to celebrate the 21st anniversary of their albums I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. The first two shows in the series took place at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Conor Oberst: "We Are All Very Sorry"
Following the cancellation, Conor Oberst expressed sympathy for the fans’ disappointment and acknowledged the band’s own struggle to cope with the situation. Oberst said they had planned the concert for over a year and that the events disrupted their expectations.
He described how the storm advanced rapidly and struck with great force. Decisions were made in consultation with meteorologists and city officials, and in this case, the worst-case scenario was enacted for safety reasons.
The band had received approval to perform the "Wide Awake" set but took the stage with a warning that conditions could change quickly. According to Oberst, as the band was leaving the stage, organizers and venue officials informed them that the show had to be stopped immediately to ensure everyone’s safety.
The artist said they had worked for months to bring the three concerts together, but two of the three events were impacted by severe weather. As a result, they suffered financial losses and were unable to complete the planned celebration.
Ticket Refunds Announced
Information on how ticket holders could receive refunds was also provided. Tickets purchased through AXS will be automatically fully refunded, while those who bought tickets through other channels are advised to contact their point of purchase.
Another notable moment for Bright Eyes last year was Conor Oberst’s participation in a look-alike contest in Omaha. The band released their album Five Dice, All Threes last year.
