Sean Casey, the Liberal Party MP representing Charlottetown in Canada’s Parliament, said he was removed from his position after supporting a bill concerning Canadian-made military equipment that could reach Israel.
Casey said he was dismissed as parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs after voting in favor of the bill introduced by Jenny Kwan, an MP from the opposition New Democratic Party. The bill aimed to close loopholes allowing Canadian-made military equipment to reach Israel after being sold to other countries.
Casey said the party whip warned him in March that supporting the bill could lead to his removal. The bill was later defeated in the House of Commons.

Casey said he used his vote to reflect the concerns of voters in his constituency, becoming one of 15 Liberal MPs to support the bill. He was also the only one among those MPs serving as a parliamentary secretary.
Casey said he learned of his removal in a phone call from the prime minister’s office on Thursday. Quebec MP Sophie Chatel was appointed to replace him the following day.
Jenny Kwan, who introduced the bill, described the development as concerning. Kwan said it raised questions about whether Liberal MPs were free to vote in line with the demands of their constituents.
