Chloe Malle has been appointed Head of Editorial Content at American Vogue. The 40-year-old Malle will play a key role in determining how the magazine adapts to a new generation.
Malle, daughter of actress Candice Bergen and the late filmmaker Louis Malle, began her career at Vogue 15 years ago. At that time, she worked as a social editor, managing the section focused on weddings and events.
She explained that initially, this section seemed too light for her and did not fully align with her serious journalistic approach. Over time, her responsibilities at the magazine expanded, and she took on a more influential role in shaping the editorial direction.
Malle noted that today, trends are accessible around the clock via phones, yet people still value Vogue. For readers constantly surrounded by content and information, authority and authenticity have become even more important.
Issue Focused on the 250th Anniversary of the United States
The magazine’s June summer issue stood out with a feature celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. One of the planned shoots at Big Bend National Park coincided with a period when the government was considering building a wall through the park.
Malle said this choice reflected the spirit of the moment and that there were internal debates within the magazine about whether it was appropriate to celebrate America. For the first time in Vogue’s more than 130-year history, the summer issue featured only American designers.
Malle expressed that Vogue supports American fashion and continues to openly embrace this stance. She said she is not afraid of criticism and that representing the people they support is what matters most.
The interview also covered how today’s Vogue differs from the era when her mother was the magazine’s first subscriber and how traditional media has evolved. Topics included the magazine’s positioning amid a media landscape shaken by declining web traffic due to artificial intelligence, accusations of "fake news," and industry layoffs.
