The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has established a secret task force to increase pressure on the Cuban government. According to the New York Times, which based its report on sources close to the matter, the force will expand the scope of intelligence operations on the island.
The task force will operate as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to bring about economic, political and leadership change in Cuba, the report said. It added that the team would enable the transfer of more financial, human and technical resources to Cuba.
Field agents, analysts, cyber experts and personnel focused on covert influence operations have begun joining the task force, the report noted. The primary goal, it said, is to create divisions within the Cuban political elite, encouraging the replacement of officials seen as anti-American with figures more open to Trump's demands.
The CIA declined to comment on these claims.
