Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said in remarks in Riga that Israel’s government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, had taken the country to “a very dangerous point.”
Describing the current government as “the most far-right government” in Israel’s history, Eide said he hoped Israel would eventually recognize the danger of the path it is pursuing, regardless of the outcome of the elections scheduled for October.
Criticism of the West’s stance
Eide also criticized Western countries’ approach to conflicts in the Middle East, describing it as “inconsistent, uncertain and unprincipled.” He argued that this stance was undermining the credibility of those countries.
Eide said many countries had avoided criticizing Israel, while criticism directed at the country was easily met with accusations of antisemitism. He said this situation was pushing the international community toward less courageous policies.
Plan to restrict trade with settlements
Eide’s remarks came days after Norway became one of 12 countries to announce plans to restrict trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Norway recognized Palestine in 2024.
