President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York during diplomatic engagements surrounding the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Following the meeting, Zelensky said he thanked Erdoğan for Türkiye’s consistent support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The two leaders discussed security in the Black Sea, including ways to safeguard the operation of the maritime export corridor and protect commercial shipping in the region.
Black Sea navigation has become an increasingly important issue amid the continuing Russia-Ukraine war. Türkiye has repeatedly called for responsible conduct by all sides and expressed concern over attacks targeting Turkish and other commercial vessels in the region.
Zelensky also briefed Erdoğan on his contacts with the U.S. team during his visit to New York. The Ukrainian president met U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where the two discussed possible de-escalation measures and steps that could open the way for diplomacy.
The Turkish and Ukrainian presidents also addressed bilateral issues, including the proposed free trade area and a possible agreement related to unmanned aerial vehicles.

Türkiye’s Role in Peace Efforts
Zelensky expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s readiness to contribute to efforts aimed at advancing peace and ending the war.
Türkiye has maintained diplomatic contacts with both Ukraine and Russia throughout the conflict and has repeatedly emphasized negotiations as the path toward a sustainable settlement.
Erdoğan has also placed particular emphasis on maritime security in the Black Sea, warning that attacks on commercial vessels risk further complicating the conflict.
The meeting came as diplomatic activity surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war intensified in New York, with Ukrainian, Turkish, American and other international officials holding a series of talks during the UN General Assembly.
