A Florida surgeon has performed what officials describe as the first telerobotic operation between two U.S. hospitals, removing the prostate of a 66-year-old cancer patient from about 35 miles away.
Dr. Vipul Patel, founder and medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at AdventHealth Celebration in suburban Orlando, operated remotely on Sunday while the patient, identified as Mark, was at an AdventHealth facility in Minneola, Florida. Study co-principal investigator and surgeon Marcio Moschovas provided onsite support, and AdventHealth said the patient was recovering well.

The procedure was part of a clinical study conducted under a Food and Drug Administration-approved investigational device exemption, which allows the system to be studied but does not constitute FDA approval. It followed 10 investigational telesurgeries between Orlando and Luanda, Angola.
"For generations, access to highly specialized care has often depended on where a patient lives," Patel said. "This study allows us to evaluate whether telesurgery could one day help reduce geographic barriers to specialized treatment." Researchers are still evaluating the safety, reliability and cybersecurity of telesurgery, and AdventHealth cautioned that the operation did not establish the technology's general clinical performance.
