Half of Americans reported skipping meals because of rising food prices, according to a survey of about 1,000 people conducted in August by financial firm Self Financial.
Grocery prices rose 28% from September 2020 to September 2026, federal data shows, with ground beef up 67% and coffee up 108%. Respondents said high grocery prices affected their mental health and stress levels more than their physical activity, diet or sleep.

The cost of living is weighing on voters ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms. A New York Times/Siena poll found that 69% of voters disapprove of the cost of living under President Donald Trump and 73% disapprove of his handling of gas prices. "Voters are dissatisfied with both the Democratic and Republican parties but they see Democrats as more trusted to do a better job on the economy, the cost of living, gas prices, health care, corruption, foreign wars and AI by between eight and twenty points," said Don Levy, director of the Siena Research Institute.
Average gas prices have been at $4 or higher on more days in 2026 than in any previous year, according to GasBuddy, and a September study from Goldman Sachs found that just over 60% of households earning $50,000 or less are living paycheck to paycheck.
