Germany postponed a phone call planned for Wednesday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said the call had been included in Merz’s schedule but that the German side had decided to postpone it. Kornelius said no new date had been set.
The spokesman did not comment on why the phone call was postponed.
Trump administration supported AfD
The postponement came as tensions between Washington and Berlin were rising. While the Trump administration publicly criticized Germany’s immigration policy, it also supported the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
AfD won an election held on Sunday in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Trump praised the result in a post on his Truth Social account on Tuesday.
Trump wrote that the populist party in Germany had enjoyed a major election night. Saying that voters were tired of immigration rules they believed had seriously harmed them, Trump said the party was on the rise and used “MGGA,” an abbreviation of “Make Germany Great Again.”
