A home on White Star Circle in Billings, Montana, was completely destroyed by fire despite police responding to a report of gunshots. Several adults and children died in the incident.
Police described the attack as a domestic dispute that took place near the West End neighborhood on Sunday evening. Officers were sent to the area after receiving a report of gunshots coming from the home.
Yellowstone County interim Sheriff Kent O’Donnell said officers arrived at the home about 10 minutes after receiving the report and heard gunshots coming from the rear of the building. According to O’Donnell, the home was fully engulfed in flames about three minutes later.
NBC reported that the attacker died by suicide with their own gun after setting the home on fire. The cause of the fire and the full circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
Official death toll has not yet been released
O’Donnell said that “more than one adult and more than one child” had died in the home. The identities of those killed have been determined, but their number, names and ages have not yet been officially released.
The sheriff said the water used to extinguish the fire slowed the examination of the scene and the recovery of evidence. O’Donnell said investigators needed time to complete the investigation.
Firefighters faced difficulties because of limited water access
Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel said crews encountered limited water access and inadequate hydrant conditions at the scene. Hoppel said these difficulties hampered the response and worsened the conditions of the fire, resulting in the deaths of those inside the home.
Police Sergeant Jeff Stovall said some details had not been released to protect the integrity of the investigation.
A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe claimed that at least eight people, including two children, had died. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed that number.
