U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a trilateral meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the leaders of China and Russia would be “a very positive event” for the world, after stating that Trump was interested in holding such a meeting.
Rubio, who traveled to India as part of an Asian tour, met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a stop in Mumbai on his two-day official visit. Rubio said they discussed energy security and defense cooperation.
Rubio said the strategic partnership between the United States and India needed to be strengthened, describing relations between Washington and New Delhi as “very, very close.” He also expressed optimism about reaching a trade agreement between the United States and India.
Arms control could be discussed at potential trilateral meeting
Rubio said issues such as arms control could be discussed at a meeting attended by the leaders of the United States, China and Russia. He said he believed the world would be safer if the leaders of countries with the largest nuclear arsenals were at least in communication with one another.

Rubio also responded to a statement by a person linked to the Kyiv administration claiming that Ukrainians had died because the United States refused to share intelligence. Calling the claim “completely false,” Rubio said there was no targeted political instruction to harm Ukraine.
Venezuela’s oil and energy talks with the UAE
Rubio said companies in India had the capacity to process oil extracted in Venezuela and announced that he would discuss the issue with one of the companies the following day.
The U.S. secretary of state also announced that he had held a trilateral meeting with Jaishankar and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed. Rubio said energy security and economic issues were discussed at the meeting.
