U.S. President Donald Trump said Volodymyr Zelenskiy should seek an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Trump urged Zelenskiy to reach a deal that would end the war with Russia, saying the European Union was becoming tired of spending on Ukraine.
Responding to reporters' questions in the Oval Office, Trump said the European Union had a significant amount of money but was beginning to tire of spending it on Ukraine. Saying that the United States and Europe were providing large amounts of resources to Ukraine, Trump argued that the United States was getting nothing in return for this spending apart from high diesel prices.
Hostility between Putin and Zelenskiy
Trump said it would lead to a very bad outcome if Zelenskiy did not want to end the war. Asked whether the peace process had resumed moving forward after meetings in Oslo, Norway's capital, Trump replied that he believed Russia wanted to end the war.
Comparing Russia to a large machine, Trump said the country was continuing to advance and had an unlimited supply of manpower. Trump also said the hostility between Putin and Zelenskiy was very strong and that it was one of the main reasons the two leaders had been unable to reach an agreement.
Asked whether Putin and Zelenskiy needed to be in the same room for a peace agreement to be signed, Trump said this was not necessary and that the agreement could also be reached through another method.

Option of a meeting with Russia and China
Trump had previously said he was open to the idea of holding a meeting with Russia and China to resolve the war in Ukraine. Diplomatic options for ending the war that began in Ukraine in 2022 remain on the agenda within this framework.
Trump spoke with Putin about Hubbard
Trump was also asked whether an agreement was close on the release of Stephen Hubbard, a retired U.S. teacher detained in Russia. Saying he did not want to discuss the matter, Trump asked for the same question to be raised again in a few days.
Trump said he had been speaking with Putin for a long time about Hubbard's situation and had asked the Russian president to release Hubbard. Trump said he wanted Hubbard to return to the United States and that it was now time for him to be released.
In October 2024, a Russian court sentenced Hubbard to approximately seven years in prison on the grounds that he had served as a mercenary on behalf of Ukraine.
