U.S. President Donald Trump said Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar could face prison over a federal immigration investigation into her age. Trump said Omar could be imprisoned in addition to potentially being deported as part of the investigation.
Trump made the remarks in the Oval Office on Tuesday after reporters asked whether Omar could be deported if a problem with her age were identified. "It could happen. She could also go to prison," he said. Trump said this was his view, adding, "They keep talking about deportation. No, she could go to prison."
Allegations in the federal investigation
Federal agents searched Omar’s home earlier this month. During the search, conducted as part of an immigration fraud investigation, they seized a phone, laptops, notebooks and Omar’s passport.
The investigation examines whether Omar or her late father made false statements about Omar’s age in official documents when she obtained citizenship in 2000. Allegations of a possible conspiracy are also part of the investigation.

Omar accuses Trump administration of political motive
Omar, who denied the allegations, said she came to the United States in 1995 at the age of 12 and obtained citizenship at 17. The Trump administration is considering revoking Omar’s citizenship and then deporting her.
Omar described the search of her home as politically motivated. In a statement posted on X, she said, "Let’s be absolutely clear: This is an attempt to target political opponents and weaponize federal law enforcement. This is the latest escalation in a campaign of political intimidation."
Omar, the first Somali-born member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has served since 2019.
