Harry Kane was named winner of the 2026 Ballon d'Or on Oct. 26 at the London Palladium, ending a 25-year wait for an English winner. The Bayern Munich striker is the fifth Englishman to win the award and the first since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane scored 73 goals for club and country in the 2025-26 season. He won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal with Bayern and helped England reach the semifinals of the World Cup, which the United States, Canada and Mexico co-hosted this summer.
Kylian Mbappé finished second in the voting, followed by Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Inter Miami's Lionel Messi.
"Being in London, it is extra special, it felt like a good omen," Kane said. "It's just the journey. For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible."
The ceremony started 30 minutes late, at 8:30 p.m. local time, after the award's official website mistakenly published the winners hours earlier. Alexia Putellas won the women's Ballon d'Or for a third time, Yamal was named best young player, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente took the coaching award and Unai Simón was named best goalkeeper.
Gerd Müller Trophy, too
Kane also collected the Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to the season's top scorer, becoming only the second player to win it twice after sharing the 2024 prize with Kylian Mbappé. Of his 73 goals, 61 came for Bayern and 12 for England, and his 36 Bundesliga goals earned him the European Golden Shoe.
He is the first player from Germany's top flight to win the Ballon d'Or since Matthias Sammer in 1996, and Bayern's first winner since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Allianz Arena turns gold
Bayern lit up the Allianz Arena in gold instead of its usual red overnight in Kane's honor. The club plans a special welcome for him before Wednesday's German Cup match against Magdeburg and will honor him again before Saturday's top-of-the-table Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund.
