The Turkish Consulate General in Houston has hosted two leaders of a Texas nonprofit that works to bring Turkish art to American audiences. In a post on X early Saturday, the consulate thanked Nuşin Van Winkle, founding president of the Turkish American Visual and Performing Arts association (TAVPA), and painter Nur Gürel “for their kind visit.”
A photo released by the consulate shows the two guests seated in an office at the mission, next to a Turkish flag, with a consulate official. The consulate did not share further details about the meeting.
Born at a centennial art show
TAVPA is a Dallas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that describes its mission as promoting Turkish arts and artists in the United States and fostering cross-cultural connections. According to the group, the idea took shape at an art exhibit celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, which its future leaders attended together. The founders met for a brainstorming dinner in January 2024 to create a lasting platform for Turkish visual and performing arts, including a traveling exhibition that blends visual art, music and dance.
Beyond exhibitions, the organization also hosts the Dallas Turkish Film Festival.
A physician-educator and a painter
Van Winkle, listed by TAVPA as co-president of its board, earned her medical degree from Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir and has more than 25 years of experience teaching medical courses in higher education, according to her biography on the group's website. She also serves as Dallas coordinator for Turks Without Borders, which connects Turkish American students with high school students in Türkiye to teach English, and mentors young women in STEM.
Gürel, TAVPA's visual art director, was born in Istanbul in 1980 and studied painting at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, earning her undergraduate degree in 2004 and her master's in 2007. She has held three solo exhibitions and taken part in group shows and symposiums in Türkiye, the United States, Germany, Moldova and Bulgaria. Her series “Toy with Proportions” has been featured by outlets including People, CBC, HuffPost and BuzzFeed.
The visit comes days after Turkish missions across the U.S. marked the 103rd anniversary of the Republic, including a reception hosted by the Houston consulate.
