Iran carried out Shahram Sadeki’s death sentence in the morning. The execution was carried out under a ruling by the Karaj Revolutionary Court, which accused Sadeki of conducting activities on behalf of the US and Israel and working against Iran’s national security and interests.
Sadeki was also accused of hitting seven police officers with his vehicle during the protests and causing them to sustain injuries.
Protests spread from Tehran across Iran
Demonstrations in Iran began at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on December 28, 2025. The protests emerged as merchants expressed their opposition to the rapid depreciation of the national currency against foreign currencies and worsening economic problems.
The demonstrations later continued across the country. Protests in Tehran turned into violent clashes on January 8, after which Iranian authorities restricted internet access.

Figures on the protests differed
Iranian authorities did not announce the total number of people killed and injured in the events. The US-based Iran Human Rights News Agency, however, reported that 5,858 people were killed and 41,283 were detained during the protests.
The forensic medicine unit of Iran’s Martyrs and Veterans Foundation announced on January 21 that 3,117 people, including security personnel and civilians, had been killed during the protests.
The foundation unit said that 2,427 of those people were security personnel and civilians killed by armed terrorist groups. It did not provide information about the deaths of 690 people.
