Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a written statement on the United States’ new sanctions against Iran. The ministry argued that the sanctions, regardless of their name or scope, violated the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights.
The statement described the sanctions as entirely illegal and unjust. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said all countries were obliged to refrain from enforcing the measures.
Call on governments not to endorse sanctions
The ministry called on governments not to recognize or endorse consequences arising from actions that violated the sanctions.
Iran argued that joining the United States’ unilateral sanctions would help Washington impose its will on other states. The statement also said the sanctions disrupted countries’ legitimate economic and trade relations.
Tehran signals response
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country would use all available means to defend itself against the economic war and threats from the United States and Israel. The statement signaled that the Iranian government could resort to economic and political measures in response to the sanctions.
The US administration had previously announced what it called “the most crushing” sanctions package in history against Iran. Washington had also threatened third countries cooperating with Iran with sanctions.
