The implementation of the US-backed framework agreement signed between Lebanon and Israel in June was a key focus of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's visit to Athens. Aoun called on both sides to implement the agreement fully and without selectively applying its provisions.
In remarks after meeting Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas on Monday, Aoun said Lebanon and its people were tired of wars. The Lebanese Presidency announced the remarks on X, the US-based social media platform.
Aoun points to diplomacy as the solution
Aoun said the purpose of negotiations with Israel was to end the state of hostilities and asked Greece to contribute as much as possible to the implementation of the framework agreement.
"We are determined to end the state of hostilities. The solution lies not in war, but in diplomacy."
Aoun also thanked Greece for its political, humanitarian and military support for Lebanon. He said they aimed to develop relations with Greece in all areas in a way that would serve Lebanon's common interests.
What the framework agreement provides for
The agreement provides for Israel's gradual withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories and the deployment of the Lebanese Army in the areas vacated. The text also includes the disarmament of armed groups, in reference to Hezbollah.
Aoun stressed that Lebanon's stability was important for the stability of the region and Europe. He said any instability in the country could lead to far-reaching negative consequences and noted that they expected support from friendly countries, particularly Greece.
Since the beginning of March, Israel has carried out large-scale attacks in southern Lebanon, saying that it was targeting Hezbollah. Hezbollah has also carried out attacks on Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon. These developments led to the de facto end of the ceasefire that had been in effect since late 2024.
