ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox will be subject to the additional obligations set out for very large online services following the European Commission's new classification under the Digital Services Act.
ChatGPT, which reaches an average of at least 45 million monthly users within the European Union, was classified as a "very large online search engine." Reddit, a social news and discussion platform, and Roblox, a digital gaming platform, were classified as "very large online platforms."
The compliance period will end in December 2026
Companies will have to implement the additional obligations for these services by the end of December 2026.
These obligations cover assessing and mitigating systemic risks linked to the spread of illegal content and adverse effects on children, as well as risks related to users' physical and mental health, fundamental rights, electoral processes and public security.
The Commission's scope of review is expanding
With the classification, the European Commission will also have the authority to examine the functions of these services and the systems connected to them.
Following the decisions, the total number of services classified by the EU as very large online platforms and search engines under the Digital Services Act rose to 28.
