New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted Palestinian families from Gaza at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence in New York City.
The gathering took place on the night of September 23, with Mamdani sharing a meal with the Palestinian families before joining them in planting an olive tree on the grounds of the residence.
Mamdani shared footage from the gathering on social media on September 24. The timing drew attention as the post appeared around the time Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Last night I planted an olive tree at Gracie Mansion with Palestinian families from Gaza. May peace be our future,” Mamdani wrote in his post.
Netanyahu also referred to Mamdani during his UN General Assembly speech, accusing the New York mayor of antisemitism. Mamdani later responded to Netanyahu’s remarks, describing the accusations against him as “baseless lies.”

The meeting with Palestinian families from Gaza and the planting of the olive tree put Mamdani’s message on Palestine and peace in the spotlight as the UN General Assembly remained at the center of attention in New York.
