As mediation efforts continue to revive direct negotiations between the US and Iran, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
They discussed regional developments in West Asia, as well as ways to strengthen peace, stability and security. The Iranian government said the contact focused on regional security issues and strategies to enhance stability.
Pakistan and Qatar seek a new basis for negotiations
The call took place after the 60-day period envisaged for a final agreement to end the war, which had continued for months, expired. Pakistan and Qatar are continuing their mediation efforts to bring the US and Iran back to direct negotiations.
Pakistani government sources said Munir, who is actively involved in the process, is expected to travel to Tehran in the coming days as part of the latest initiative. The Pakistani government and military have not issued an official statement on the visit.
Negotiations stalled over security and the Strait of Hormuz
Pakistan maintained close contact with both sides while playing an important mediating role between the US and Iran throughout the war.
The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 to begin negotiations toward a final agreement. However, the talks stalled over disagreements regarding security guarantees and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is strategically important for global energy supplies and trade.
Mutual attacks took place from July 8 to 24
