California Governor Gavin Newsom has required state agencies to use only the terms "artificial intelligence" and "AI" in official proceedings when referring to artificial intelligence.

The executive order Newsom signed on Wednesday requires all departments and agencies under the governor’s office to use these two terms in their systems. Even if the federal government uses different or renamed terms, state agencies will not change their terminology.
In the text of the executive order, Newsom argued that renaming artificial intelligence could not conceal the failure to take action against security and safety risks associated with the technology. The California governor also noted that the state is home to major technology companies in Silicon Valley.

U.S. President Donald Trump changed the name of artificial intelligence to "super intelligence" in an executive order he signed the same day. Trump also announced a day earlier that the executives of the largest technology companies in the United States had signed an "morally binding" agreement on oversight of the technology.
