German Defense Minister Pistorius announced that they were considering options to restrict access to the classified Germany Operational Plan if the AfD forms a government in Saxony-Anhalt.
Speaking in parliament, Pistorius said measures to prevent the plan from falling into the AfD's hands were being considered.
Classified plan includes defense and crisis measures
The Germany Operational Plan sets out the military and civil measures to be implemented in the event of a possible crisis or war. The document contains provisions concerning Germany's responsibilities within the framework of NATO and national defense, as well as the deployment of troops from allied countries through Germany to NATO's eastern flank.
The complete text of the plan is held by state chancellelleries and relevant state authorities. Municipalities have access only to an abridged version of the document.
Future of information sharing under debate
Spokespersons for the Defense Ministry did not directly answer whether security and defense information provided to the Saxony-Anhalt government would be restricted if a state government led by the AfD were formed. The spokespersons only said that the plan was classified.
Rainer Robra, secretary of the Saxony-Anhalt State Chancellery, opposed depriving the state government of security and defense information if the AfD comes to power.
Robra, a member of the CDU, said he could not understand how constitutionally required cooperation between the states could continue if the state were unable to access information on domestic or defense policy. Robra also warned that further exclusion of the AfD at the federal level following its result in democratic elections could produce the opposite effect.
AfD wins 39 seats
The AfD came first in the state parliament election held in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, September 6, winning 43.8 percent of the vote. The party will hold 39 seats in the 83-member parliament.
In the parliament, where the CDU won 15 seats, the SPD, Greens and Left Party each won 8 seats, while the BSW won 5.
