A New York court sentenced Rex Heuermann, known as the Long Island serial killer, to life in prison without parole for crimes related to the murders of eight women.
At the hearing in Riverhead, Judge Timothy Mazzei gave Heuermann three consecutive life sentences, followed by four terms of 25 years to life. The court also dismissed three lesser charges.
Heuermann entered the judicial process after being arrested outside his Manhattan office in 2023. Prosecutors initially charged him with seven murders of women; later, Heuermann admitted to an eighth murder in a hearing.
Following the sentencing, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said local authorities expect Heuermann to be transferred to prison before the weekend ends. It was reported that Heuermann has been transferred to prison and his processing is continuing at Green Haven Correctional Facility.
Heuermann's ex-wife Asa Ellerup, through her attorney Bob Macedonio, stated that the sentence was appropriate and that Heuermann paid the price for his actions. Ellerup also said that killing eight people is unacceptable.
At the hearing, Judge Mazzei criticized Heuermann harshly, calling him cowardly and despicable. Heuermann gave brief answers to questions in court and said he was at least somewhat remorseful for what he had done.
Heuermann was arrested outside his Manhattan office on July 13, 2023, after which police searched his family's home in Massapequa Park. The case became one of the most prominent chapters in the long-unsolved disappearances and murders around Gilgo Beach.
