Fred Marsh, a young police officer from Rogers, Arkansas, drowned in a river while attempting to rescue his fiancée. The 24-year-old had proposed to Hailey just hours before the tragedy.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Marsh was part of a group canoeing on the Elk River on Saturday when his fiancée Hailey entered the water and was swept away by the current. Marsh and another Rogers police officer jumped in to save her.
Hailey was rescued safely, but Fred Marsh became exhausted and disappeared underwater. Search and rescue teams found Marsh's body on Sunday and determined he had died at the scene.
The fiancée's mother, Sheryl Padgett, told local TV station KHBS that Marsh was a helpful and faithful person. "There was nothing he couldn't do. You didn't have to tell him or beg him; he was always ready to help," Padgett said.
Padgett explained that after losing her son four years ago, she formed a deep bond with Marsh. "We connected instantly. I called him my son, and he called me mom," she said.
Marsh's body was transported in a convoy through northwest Arkansas on Monday. Crowds gathered along the route to salute the young officer on his final journey.
Marsh, who had recently started at the Rogers Police Department, graduated from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in April. A GoFundMe campaign started by Hailey's sister had raised about $2,000 as of Thursday morning to support the family.
The campaign page stated, "Fred was an exemplary young man as a son, fiancé, police officer, brother, friend, and more. We are devastated and will miss him greatly."
Funeral arrangements are being made by Marsh's family. Padgett said police officers from across the state, former classmates, and childhood friends are expected to attend the service.
Sheryl Padgett urged everyone to do good, saying, "Let's do something in Fred's memory. Be kind to people. When Fred loved, he loved with all his heart, and he loved well."
