A heavy equipment accident at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Thursday killed a 23-year-old airman.
Base officials said Airman Cedric Eneluna was operating the heavy equipment when it rolled down a slope. No other personnel were injured.
Eneluna served in the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron's Road and Equipment Flight. This unit maintains critical infrastructure such as roads and airfields that support Vandenberg's launch, test, and range operations.
He reportedly spent part of his childhood in the Philippines. He joined the military on March 5, 2024, arrived at Vandenberg for his first assignment in August, and became part of the "Dirt Boyz" team of heavy equipment specialists.
In a condolence message, the base stated: "A1C Eneluna served with honor, humility, and unwavering commitment to his teammates and his mission. His loss is deeply felt by the entire Vandenberg family."
The commander of the 30th Space Launch Delta and Vandenberg Space Force Base, Colonel James T. Horne III, said Eneluna left a lasting impression on his teammates with his character, dedication, and genuine concern for others.
The squadron commander, Lieutenant Colonel Seth Poulsen, said Eneluna exemplified the qualities of an excellent airman. "He was always ready to work, willing to help, and maintained a positive attitude. He truly represented what it means to be an airman," Poulsen said.
While the Santa Barbara County Coroner's Office has not yet determined the cause of death, units at the base are providing support to the Safety Investigation Board regarding the incident.
