Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Russia could not launch a large-scale attack against NATO given the military resources it is committing to the war in Ukraine.
Sikorski made the assessment after Poland said last week that it had received information from various sources that Russia was "preparing something big" this year. Asked what Moscow was planning, he said only Russian President Vladimir Putin could know the answer.
Stressing that NATO must remain prepared, Sikorski called on the alliance not to allow itself to be manipulated and to respond to provocations quickly and jointly.
Sikorski said Russia might instead pursue a smaller-scale initiative that could spark debate among the allies. He said such a development could put allies in Europe and the US at odds over whether NATO’s Article 5, which provides for collective defense, should be invoked.
The Polish foreign minister also said Moscow could continue its current activities in a more aggressive manner. Western governments accuse Russia of carrying out sabotage and violating airspace as part of a hybrid war campaign targeting NATO and European Union countries.
