Milwaukee-based screamo band Snag has released their new song "Unarrest Me" ahead of their debut Deathwish album All The Cages Holding Us Will One Day Turn To Dust. The band announced the album will be out in about a month, highlighting that this track reflects the album’s intense and sharp spirit.
The song opens with a nimble guitar line reminiscent of late-90s emo, then shifts into a more aggressive and frantic structure. The lyrics emphasize the experience of being face down on the ground, wrists bound, and overwhelmed by intense panic.
The Feeling of Wrongful Detention at the Song’s Core
Samm Szymborski, who wrote and sings the song, explained that “Unarrest Me” is told from the perspective of a wrongful detention moment. Szymborski described the track as conveying confusion, panic, and the inhumane attitude of the detaining officer.
He also noted that musically the song tells a story on its own, taking listeners on a tense journey that abruptly ends at its peak. The band builds the emotional intensity with this sudden sharpness.
Video Highlights the Idea of Solidarity
The video for “Unarrest Me” was co-directed by Snag and Samer Ghani. It features a group of friends trying to prevent such a detention, emphasizing the concept of collective intervention.
Bassist Peter Murphy described the video’s theme as “mutual aid leading to collective liberation.” Murphy said the contrast between symbols like zip ties and blindfolds with flashlights and running scenes reinforces the idea that one person can free another.
The album All The Cages Holding Us Will One Day Turn To Dust will be released on July 7 via Deathwish, Inc. “Unarrest Me” clearly showcases the angry and intense direction the band is taking ahead of the album.
