Calls for a new attempt at mass migration to Ceuta have become the subject of an investigation by Spain’s Civil Guard.
Investigators identified a campaign in chat groups on certain social media platforms that encouraged people to travel to Ceuta. The groups, which include more than 400,000 people, contained calls pointing to August 15 as well as logistical details about the initiative.
Spanish authorities concluded that the posts involved digital coordination. However, it remains unclear whether the new migration attempt will take place. There is no evidence that the campaign was planned by the Moroccan government or criminal organizations.
The previous attempt in Ceuta
In a previous incident, more than 800 irregular migrants who tried to reach Ceuta by swimming from the coast of Castillejos in Morocco were intercepted.
Following the incident, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that the government had mobilized all its resources. The Spanish government also decided to deploy the armed forces in the area to ensure security after an increase in irregular migration attempts toward Ceuta.
